ITIL training (almost) for free

Like Tweet Pin it Share Share Email

Inspired by IT Skeptic’s article “How to assemble all the ITSM reference library you need for $211”, I’ve decided to describe how cheaply (or even almost for free) one can get ITIL training (V2 and V3)

Typically, the cost of foundation level e-learning course for ITIL v2 or v3 is more or less several hundred dollars, the cost of traditional one is often more than one thousand dollars. So, can one have an ITIL training cheaper or almost for free?

I think, the answer is yes, provided that you have a bit of self-denying and you can get used to e-learning.

So what’s the price? In some cases, it’s almost for free. You’ll pay up to $99, but if you are a resident of one of the following countries you pay only 17 $, and if you are a student the price is very appealing – only $ 19. For this price, you get the membership of the ACM.

But what about the ITIL? As a part of membership in ACM you gain access to the Skillsoft training library with more than 3000 e-courses and more than 1,000 books in Books24x7 and Safari Online libraries.

The following directly associated with ITIL items are available:

ITIL V2:

  • ITIL: The Service Desk and Incident Management
  • ITIL: Configuration and Release Management
  • ITIL: Problem and Change Management
  • ITIL: Financial and Security Management
  • ITIL: Service Level and Capacity Management
  • ITIL: Continuity and Availability Management
  • ITIL Foundation Overview
  • ITIL Orientation
  • ITIL Cultural Awareness
  • TestPrep Information Technology Infrastructure Library Foundations (ITIL) – preparation for the ITIL Foundation exam (V2) (ITIL v2 mock exams)
  • Mentoring Information Technology Infrastructure Library Foundations (ITIL) – Sample questions for exams delivered daily via e-mail, there is also a possibility of e-mail consultations with a course mentor.

ITIL V3

  • ITIL V3 – and the ITIL Service Lifecycle
  • ITIL V3 – Service Design Processes
  • ITIL V3 – Service Design Fundamentals
  • ITIL V3 – Service Strategy Fundamentals
  • ITIL V3 – Continual Service Improvement Fundamentals
  • ITIL V3 – Service Operation Processes
  • ITIL V3 – Service Operation Principles and Functions
  • ITIL V3 – Service Strategy Processes
  • ITIL V3 – Service Transition Processes and Principles
  • TestPrep ITIL V3 Foundation (ITV3F) – preparation for the ITIL Foundation exam (V3) (ITIL v3 mock exams)
  • Mentoring ITIL V3 Foundation (ITV3F) – Sample questions for exams delivered daily via e-mail, there is also a possibility of e-mail consultations with a course mentor.

The trainings can sometimes be seemed a little tiring and lengthy (i think it’s caused by its redundancy introduced in order to better learn a course material), but meet their goals. You can also listen to a lector reading a course content and have access to training in the offline mode. After the completion of each of the courses and passing the test you can print a certificate of training completion.

In addition to this, you can find courses preparing for HDI Customer Support Specialist certification (CSS).

What’s more, it’s only a drop in the sea of all available courses, the total amount is more than 3000, and they relate to issues such as human resources management, finance, six sigma, project management, programming, marketing, Cisco, Microsoft, Novell, Sun, and many, many others – the full list of courses (though not necessarily the current one is available here.)

In the electronic library of books you can also find following ITIL-related publications:

“ITIL v3 Foundation Certification Training Program – Stephen Bajada (Books 24×7 library)

“Implementing ITIL Configuration Management” – Larry Klosterboer (Safari library)

There are also other books (for example 3th edition of PMBOK). Following links show the content of the libraries (unfortunately, you have to combine information from 2 sources, because there’s no one up-to-date list of available books).

  • Pełna zgoda. E Learning to jest opcja. Bez kosztu trenera, sali, obiadu, dojazdu.

    pozdrawiam

  • We offer some excellent online programs for all the V3 certification programs. The pograms were ctreated by ITIL V3 Experts with deep rooted practical experience and are accredited by ISEB. The delivery model is streaming video which includes the instructor lectures along with the student courseware online. We also offer tierred pricing for the International marketplace.

  • The key to good ITIL training is not the quality of the materials or the mock tests. The key is a good instructor who brings the materials to life and connects the real world to the theory of the framework. Without this, you wind up with people who can pass the test but can’t use ITIL for anything other than four letters on a business card, and think that ITIL is something you implement in organization, or worse yet, think implementing a tool is implementing ITIL. The whole thing falls apart, and then people think ITIL is a bad thing, when in fact the problem is not ITIL, it is the ignorance of the people trying to use it.

  • I have run many advanced ITIL Managers (Masters) courses in the past with a mixture of delegates some of whom have done elearning to get their Foundation certificate. There is a huge gap in their ITIL knowledge, they lack the information that would have been passed on mb a trainer who has been there, and implemented ITIL processes. I actually had one delegate who took an on-line exam on the Friday before attending the Managers course on the Monday. He took the exam 3 times on-line before he passed. We had a challenging week……

  • Steve, I agree with your comments based on the type of online ITIL training programs that have been available so far. We spent several months working with enteprise clients to create a new online program that would enable students to walk away with the same experience that they get form the classroom. You can see a sample at http://www.itsmsolutions.com in the Product & Services section.

  • Interesting information as I am taking my first ITIL Course tomorrow and the exam on Friday. I already have a masters in IS and a masters in PM. Will it be that difficult for me? The sent us the manual prior to class.

  • I think, ther will be no problems for u, to pass it.. Good luck!

  • Witam,

    Pozdrawiam,
    Tomek

  • Lekka przesada Panowie z tymi doświadczonymi trenerami. Podczas mojej pracy w IT dept. dużej korporacji w pierwszej połowie minionej dekady, ITIL dopiero raczkowało.

  • Once you’re trained, what is the cheapest way to take the v3 Foundation Exam online?

  • I can recommend you a Loyalist Certification Services – it’s the cheapest way I know and you can earn the certification totally online.

  • Do you mind if I quote a couple of your posts as long as I provide credit and sources back to your website? My blog site is in the exact same niche as yours and my users would truly benefit from some of the information you present here. Please let me know if this ok with you. Thanks!

  • Great post showing that training doesn’t have to cost the earth! There is no subsitute for 1-on-1 in-person tutoring though so I’d recommend everyone studying for an ITIL exam tries to get some of this if they possibly can!
