Frameworks in management of IT

Written By: Mateusz Jasny on September 5, 2008 No Comment

There is an widespread opinion that management of it services = ITIL, sometimes someone might also though about CobiT, but there are so many others standards or frameworks, which can be used in management of IT services: AS-8005, ASL, BiSL, CMM, CMMI, CobiT, COPC2000, EFQM, eSCM (SP2), eTOM, GFIM, ISO 20000 / 27001, ISPL, IT Balanced Scorecard, ITIL, ITIM, ITSCMM, M_o_R, SMEs, OPBOK, OPM3, PM3, PMBoK, Prince2, Six Sigma , TickIT, VALIT. And please remember, I haven’t mentioned about proprietary owned frameworks like: MOF, HP ITSM or ITUP.

Not all of them are directly related to IT, but all can have application in management of IT. A modern CIO, or an IT consultant should be aware of this whole jungle of IT frameworks. This does not mean that they have to have deep knowledge, but they should be aware of what good can they bring to it organization, what are main ideas behind those frameworks, who applies them?

Why are frameworks, methodologies and collections of best practices so popular?

Probably, main factors were: the rapid changes occurring in the field of IT management and that CIO has been a profession in which knowledge had to be gained “on battlefield”. Popular management standards such as ISO 9000 or even Balanced Scorecard were too general and have not given answer to following question – how to manage information technology? For the need to create methodologies and frameworks arose. IT frameworks are really helpful in making order in many IT departments, but they have to be used wisely.

In the new series of blog entries, I will try to tell you more about these standards / methodologies.

I look forward to comments from you, what frameworks should I describe in the first place? Maybe, there is something missing here?
